NIC mobile service in Kalutara

by Ananda Kannangara

The Department of Registration of Persons (DRP) is expected to collect 28,000 applications for National Identity Cards (NICs) at a special mobile service at 19 Police stations in the Kalutara District on February 22 and 23.

"We have decided to issue the processed identity cards to the applicants before the end of next month," DRP Commissioner Wijaya Ranasinghe told the Daily News yesterday.

He said that from the first part of this mobile service launched in collaboration with Police stations in Kalutara District last week around 14,000 applications were collected.

"This mobile service program which is a brainchild of Interior and Christian Affairs Minister John Amaratunga will also be extended to all other districts including those in the North and East before the end of this year", he said.

The 19 Police stations are Panadura, Horana, Ingiriya, Anguruwatota, Moragahahena, Bandaragama, Wadduwa, Kalutara South, Kalutara North, Payagala, Aluthgama, Beruwala, Welipanna, Dodangoda, Thebuwana, Matugama, Baduraliya, Meegahatenna and Bulathsinhala.

Ranasinghe also said that the objective of seeking police assistance to carry out this program is to create a good rapport between the public and Police.

Meanwhile, a senior DRP official said that during the two days of this forthcoming mobile service applications will be accepted for new NICs and also for renewal of old and mutilated identity cards.

"Gramaseva Niladaris and photographers will be available for the convenience of applicants at all these mobile services," he added.
