Artist Mahinda Herath's work speaks volumes on what results when an attempt is made by an artist to return to his roots after a long term of self-exile.

He has lived in Paris for more than twenty years. His surrealistic expressions against his copies of Temple murals draw in parallel lines contradicting his views and free flow of style.

The 'oneness' of his surrealistic paintings and sculptures convey his ease at working within those boundaries, in such work especially the paintings, reflect how his western surroundings have managed to penetrate through his imagination. Low tones of colour or minimum use of it proves that Herath has adjusted to his foreign surroundings unlike Ivan Peris who lived and produced most of his last works in England. Peris never drifted from his style nor concept probably battling the idea of change throughout his last years.

If Herath has chosen to produce copies of temple and cave murals to be exhibited beside his regular work, at the last show he presented at Trans Asia Hotel, Colombo, as to enhance his show, it goes to prove his versatility, the exercise in terms of enhancing his presentation was successful against the end result of a confused identity.

As an Artist Herath has reached great heights. His work has been featured at the Annual Salon of the 'Societe National des Beaux - Arts' at the 'Carrousel-du-lourte' in the presence of President Jacques Chirac. His last exhibition in Colombo might have been of great significance to the artist.

During his visit Herath has made moves to export local arts and crafts to France through formation of a company here. An artist and also an Entrepreneur another point of versatility proved.
