President to meet Japanese envoy

by Ranga Jayasuriya

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will meet visiting Japanese Special Envoy Yasushi Akashi tomorrow to discuss the recent developments in the peace process and the donor conference in Japan, presidential spokesman Harim Peiris told the Daily News.

The President's meeting with Akashi comes a couple of days after she questioned his appointment as the International Affairs Advisor to the Government.

The President last Monday in a letter to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe sought clarification on reports of Akashi being named the International Affairs Advisor to the Government.

The President is yet to receive a reply, Peiris said.

Foreign affairs and defence are vital areas of the government's policy planning, that usually only locals will hold office, he said.

No Cabinet paper on Akashi's appointment had been presented. Peiris said. He said the President's letter is based on recent press reports.

The President refused to meet Akashi when he visited Sri Lanka last month.

The Government, however said the President had got it wrong and that Akashi had been appointed only the Principal Advisor to the Sub Committee on Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Immediate Humanitarian Need.
