Kirkoswald Group, Bogowantalawa and Mahagastota Group, Nanu Oya set two all-time record prices for Pekoes in the Western High Grown and the Nuwara Eliya teas, at the ex-estate tea auctions held on February 3 and 4, according to the weekly tea market report released by Forbes and Walkers Limited.

The first record was set by Kirkoswald Group, Bogowantalawa - an estate managed by the Madulsima Plantations Limited and a member of the Stassens Group of Companies when it sold a line of Pekoe 1 for Rs. 440 per kg, bettering the previous record of Rs. 406 held by Kew Estate, Bogowantalawa - two weeks ago. The existing record was bettered by Rs. 34 which is a substantial increase for the quality of teas produced by Kirkoswald Group in the Upper Dickoya valley.

The second record was set by Mahagastota Estate, Nanu Oya managed by Kelani Valley Plantation Limited - a member of the Dipped Product Group when it sold a line of Nuwara Eliya Pekoe 1 for 410 per kg. bettering its own record of Rs. 305 per kg. set in September 25, 2002. The Mahagastota Group has been regularly fetching top prices for the region.

These line of teas sold at record prices were purchased by Inter Tea (Pvt) Limited and sold through brokers Forbes and Walkers Limited. The other top prices for the different regions at the sale on February 3 and 5 are as follows:

Western Medium Grown: BOP Rs. 270 Kenilworth Group, BOPF Rs. 182 Vellan Oya Group, Pekoe Rs. 245 Orange Field Estate.

Western High Grown: BOP Rs. 220 Moray Group, Maskeliya, BOPF: Rs. 221 Moray Group and Bridwell Estate, Pekoe 1 Rs. 440 Kirkoswald Group, Bogowantalawa.

Nuwara Eliya Teas: BOP Rs. 186, BOPF Rs. 204 and Pekoe 1 for Rs. 410 by Mahagastota Group, Nanu Oya.

Udapussellawa Teas: BOP Rs. 145, BOPF Rs. 158 by Luckyland Group. Pekoe Rs. 190 Kirklees Group and Gonapitiya Group.

Uva Teas: BOP Rs. 166 Serendib Estate, BOPF Rs. 174 Bandara Eliya, Pekoe Rs. 224 Uva Halpewatte Estate.

Unorthodox Teas: (CTC)

Western High Grown: PF 1 Rs. 170 Kotiyagalla Group, Bogowantalawa, BP 1 Rs. 149 Florence Estate, BPS Rs. 152 Florence Estate.

Uva High Grown: PF 1 Rs. 141 and BPS Rs. 130 Poonagalla Group, BP 1 Rs. 125 Spring Valley Group. Medium Grown: PF 1 Rs. 150 Delta Group, Pussellawa, BP 1 Rs. 137 and BPS Rs. 138 Rothschild Group, Pussellawa.

Dusts 1: Rs. 206 Kirkoswald Group.
