Foreign shuttlers for Satellite Badminton championship

by Chris Dhambarage

Some of the top shuttlers from the Asian region will be vying for honours at the Sri Lankan Satellite badminton tournament to be worked off from February 26 to March 1 at the Royal College Sports Complex, Reid Avenue.

This event is open to international participation and the Sri Lanka Badminton Association is hoping that over fifty competitors from various countries would participate. The Sri Lanka Badminton Association has already received positive indication of participation from Japan, Taiwan, India, Pakistan and Maldives.

More countries are expected to confirm their participation in this tournament with the entries closing on February 10. This tournament is an event of the International Badminton Federation and the Asian Badminton Confederation and is also the first major tournament in the calendar for the year 2003.

The events that will be worked off are the men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. A total of US dollars 5000 has been allocated as prize money for the winners and runners-up.

This tournament will also be of great importance to the Sri Lankan players who are currently preparing for two other major international events this year. Their main competition is the South Asian Federation Games which will be staged in Islamabad, Pakistan in March/April. The Sri Lankan team has a good chance of winning few medals in this tournament considering their present form.

The Sri Lanka team will also participate in the Sudirman Cup World championships which will be held in Holland from March 18. The Sri Lankan team would probably comprise of six men and three women in addition to two officials.
