Ten years of quilting in Lanka

At a time when quilts were not made in Sri Lanka but had to be imported from Singapore or other countries for various domestic purposes such as bed linen, tablecloths and other household decorations, a Sri Lankan Company Director thought seriously about making quilts locally. He made a careful study of the subject and converted his existing business that dealt with garment accessories to producing quilts thereafter. That was the beginning of quilting with Accessories (Pvt) Ltd., a sister company of the Expolanka Group that changed over to quilting in 1993. Import and distribution of garment accessories was jeopardised and this new thinking took shape to cater to household quilt requirements while at the same time serving the BoI garment manufacturers. Today we are completing 10 years of quilting with the name Accessories going high in the local market as pioneers of quilting in Sri Lanka,” a company spokesman said. The factory consists of a staff of around 100 employees recruited from in and around Kotugoda, where the factory is located. It has six quilting machines including a recently installed computerised machine all of which has a capacity of 1,500,000 yards per annum. It serves the majority of garment factories in the island.
