Constable arrested over shooting A constable who shot dead a civilian over a personal dispute at Kattankudi early yesterday (Monday) was arrested by police while several complaints of abductions were also reported during the past few days to the security forces and the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) from Batticaloa and Ampara Districts. Three teenagers who evaded the LTTE have sought protection from the authorities in Ampara and Batticaloa. According to the Army, of the three teen-aged boys, one, from Iridiyapuram, had claimed fighting off two LTTE cadres who attempted to abduct him around 10.30 a.m. on February 1. The 17 year old had complained of the incident to the Batticaloa Police. The other two boys had claimed they had been conscripted by the LTTE on 22nd January and escaped from the training camp at Santhimale on 2nd February. The Sri Lanka Army reporting the incidents said that an attempt had also been made to abduct a soldier at Puttur in Batticaloa around midnight on February 1. The attempt by two suspected LTTE cadres is said to have been abandoned due to the arrival of a routine mobile patrol. Meanwhile, a woman of Arayampathi had complained to the Security Forces that her 18 year old daughter had been abducted on 31 January and detained. |
