Welcome for new Minister

by Matara Central Correspondent

Matara District MP Lakshman Yapa Abeywardhana who was sworn-in before President Chandrika Kumaratunga as Minister of Expatriate Employees Welfare was given a rousing welcome on his arrival in Matara by his constituents in the Kamburupitiya, Hakmana and Weligama electorates.

A giant pandal erected along Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha (the Galle-Matara main road) welcoming the new Minister was the cynosure of all eyes.

A number of religious ceremonies were attended by a large crowd and conducted at the Matara historic Bodiya under the aegis of the Chief Incumbent of the Hittatiya Raja Maha Viharaya Ven. Rajakeeya Panditha Sasthrapathi Godagama Chulalankara Thera.

Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardhana said, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe expected me to attend to the welfare activities concerning the 2.5 million expatriate employees and to draw up a plan ensuring the safety of their foreign earnings and also to see that more and more avenues of foreign employment are harnessed to reduce the unemployment problem.

Before long a strong programme will be drawn up and implemented in keeping with the aims of the Prime Minister. As an MP it was my aim to serve the masses to the best of my ability.

I have never resorted to corruption as an ordinary MP and I assure the general public that I will continue to do so even as a Minister.

Matara Maha Mantheenda Pirivenadipathie Daksina Lankawe Sanganayake Ven. Getamanne Dhammakitti Thera delivered an anusasana. Matara District MP Justin Galappatti and Matara Mayor Nimal de Silva (attorney-at-law) also spoke.
