Gamini Iriyagolla (67) a senior lawyer, writer and author passed away yesterday at a private hospital in Colombo. He was the eldest son of late I.M.R.A. Iriyagolla, a Minister of the Dudley Senanayake Government. He had his education at Royal College Colombo and later entered the Law Faculty of University of Ceylon at the age of 17 after becoming the first in the University Entrance Exam. At 22 he became the youngest advocate in the country. He sat for the Civil Service Examination and became the first to become the a civil servant at the age of 24. He proceeded to the highest ranks of advisor to the President during the Ranasinghe Premadasa regime. He also worked with the late Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike when she lost her civic rights. He was a close associate of Ministers T.B. Subasinghe and Gamini Dissanayake. He authored several books including Tamil Homeland - Truth or Fiction, The Kandyan Convention and Ceylon History. He contributed articles for several newspapers. He leaves behind his wife Indrani and two children Nayani and Rohan. His remains are at No. 347 A, Temple road, Thalapathpitiya, Nugegoda. The funeral will take on Wednesday at the General Cemetery, Kanatta, Borella. |
