Independence Day celebrationsin Chennai

The Mahabodhi Centre in Chennai, South India and its approach road, Kent Lane was gaily decorated with Sri Lanka and Buddhist Flags illuminations and buntings yesterday in preparation for today's celebrations to mark Sri Lanka's 55th Independence anniversary.

Today's independence celebrations organised for the second year in succession by the Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka are held with the participation of the Tamil population and Sri Lankan refugees living in and around Chennai, said Ven. Mudalakkuliye Ratanajoti Thera of the Chennai Mahabodhi Centre.

Several religious ceremonies and cultural itmes will be included in today's celebrations. The keynote address (anusasana) will be delivered by Ven. Maduluwawe Sobhita Thera, Viharadhipati, Naga Viharaya, Kotte. Lecturs will also be delivered by Prof. Suriya Narayan of the Chennai University and Dr. (Mrs.) Lorna Devaraja of the University of Colombo.

The cultural show will feature Sangeeth Nipun Sanath Nandasiri and Malkanthie Nandasiri while Ajith Darshana Jayaweera and Visharada Manoj Pieris will provide the music and students of the 'Kala Kshetra Peetaya' in Chennai will present the dance items.

Nearly 30 Buddhist organisations in India are sponsoring the celebrations while Ven. Mudalakkuliye Ratanajoti, Tunhitiyawe Dhammaloka and Kalawane Mahanama Theras and Sri Lanka's Deputy High Commissioner in Chennai, Sumith Nakandala are handling the arrangements at the venue.
