Correspondent The people of the North who had been battered by the curse of war for over two decades commemorate the National Day of Independence on a grand scale today under secure conditions. The celebrations commence with the hoisting of the National Flag at the auspicious hour of 8.33 a.m. by Northern Rehabilitation Deputy Minister Noordeen Masoor opposite the Vavuniya District Secretariat, the main venue of Independence Day celebrations. The hoisting of the National Flag will take place opposite the District Secretariats of Mannar and Jaffna simultaneously, followed by religious observances in temples, churches, kovils and mosques with the participation of clergy belonging to all religions. A special ringing of the temple bell ("Gantara Pooja) at the Sri Bodhi Dakshinarama Viharaya accompanied by religious observances will take place at 6 a.m. The main function will proceed at the Demala Maha Vidyalaya, Vavuniya, from dawn to dusk with the participation of more than two thousand students from Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim schools. Similar celebrations will take place at the police stations and Army Camps throughout the Northern Province in addition to a variety of Shramadana Campaigns organized by the security forces. |
