Death of Wild Life Range officer

Minister wants CID to conduct inquiry

by Florence Wickramage

Environment and Natural Resources Minister Rukman Senanayake promised family members of the slain Wild Life Range Officer M. K. C. Kumarasiri that he would take action to request the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to inquire into the death of Kumarasiri.

Kumarasiri was slain while on duty at the Uda Walawe National Park last Tuesday evening. Minister Rukman Senanayake attended the funeral which took place at the family burial grounds at Thunkama, Embilipitiya on Saturday.

Family members informed the Minister that Kumarasiri had death threats to his life due to the many successful raids conducted by him. These death threats had been from politicians and businessmen who had been engaged in unlawful activities within the park grounds such as illegal timber racketing, poaching, ganja cultivation and illegal gem mining. Expressing doubts about the way Kumarasiri came by his death and due to the many threats on his life, family members had said that they were not satisfied with the investigations conducted so far.

They then requested the Minister to get the case inquired by the CID.

Meanwhile the Environment and Natural Resources Ministry bore the funeral expenses of Kumarasiri at the request of the Minister.
