Dale of Norway to open Design Centre in Lanka

Dale of Norway, the world's leading crafter of authentic Norwegian knitwear has expanded its existing operations in Sri Lanka and is now building a design centre unlike any other in the world.

Since 1981 Dale of Norway has worked closely with local crafters, which is now known as Dale Craft Knit, producing the hand-knitted collection of sweaters and cardigans known internationally as Dale Exclusive. In recent years Dale of Norway has expanded involvement in the region and now produces various accessories, such as caps, gloves, and bags. Additionally, the expert designers have contributed greatly to Dale of Norway's product development division.

On July 26,2002 construction started on the new International Design Centre "From my first visit I considered this a magical place. The convergence of cultures from India, China, and various Middle Eastern countries, combined with a storied magnificent local tradition provides the perfect environment to develop truly unique garments that will be appreciated by the whole world", said Dale of Norway President, Sturle Harald Pedersen.

"In subsequent visits I have been overwhelmed by the seemingly endless talents of the people. The passion of these people provided all the inspiration I needed to convince my board, that this was the perfect place for our company to invest".

Recruitment of instructors and a collaborative agreement with the University of Moratuwa are currently under way, while construction of the Design Centre is targeted for completion by early 2003.

The fully equipped design centre, Dale Research and Development Services (Pvt) Ltd (Dale R & D) would develop designs not only for knitwear, but any other product that would give room for creativity. The primary objective of the new design centre is to develop designs for various products, following latest trends, for the international market. The centre has plans to expose its young designers to international trends, tastes and markets through a variety of means.

The centre will provide its modern facilities in developing young talents from students following the bachelor of design degree program conducted by the Department of Architecture - University of Moratuwa. The students will explore different areas of design such as fashion, jewellery, furniture, ceramics and graphics.

The company will also provide the use of the design centre facilities for other Sri Lankan companies which are interested in designing for the international markets. The design centre is relevant and timely especially for the apparel sector, which would face new challenges, once the quota system comes to a halt by year 2005. The design centre is already working on a number of projects of Dale of Norway, where the projects are handled in its entirety at Dale and R & D from designing to packaging.

Dale of Norway, founded in 1879, is the world's leading manufacturer of yarn and authentic Norwegian knitwear.
