by E. Weerapperuma

The Hulhule Island Hotel in the Maldives was awarded the ISO - 9001 - 2000 award at a ceremony at the Trans Asia Hotel, Colombo last week. This is the first time a hotel overseas received the ISO 9001 award by the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI).

Trade and Commerce Minister Ravi Karunanayake said that the award would give the hotel courage to continue its good work in the trade. "We congratulate you and we are proud that for the first time SLSI has given your hotel due recognition of your service. Your success will have its benefits to you and to us Sri Lankans, your neighbour", the Minister said.

General Manager of the Hotel Michael J. Stevens said that the hotel had achieved the unique distinction of becoming the first tourist hotel in the Republic of the Maldives to obtain the 1SO 9001-2000 certification. "We consider it a privilege to receive the award from the Sri Lanka Standards Institution which holds full membership in the Geneva based ISO establishment to develop a common set of manufacturing, trade and communication standards", he said.

Maj. Gen. Abdul Sattar Anbaree, Minister of State for Defence and National Security of the Republic of Maldives said he was impressed by the recognition the hotel got from the SLSI.

"We have many things in common to share in the industry and we want to improve our standards further. The award received by the hotel will give the encouragement to continue the work", he said.

He said that it was customary to appoint a Minister to Head the Directors' Board of the Hotel as it was a Government's concern. thus he plays the role of the Chairman of the hotel at present.

SLSI Director General/CEO C. D. R. A. Jayawardene said that the ISO award would help to draw more customers and ensure quality of service.

" This is the first time a hotel outside Sri Lanka received the award for excellence. It will help them to market production and services", he said.

Millennium Resources Development Consultants (MRDC) Chairman and Managing Director Wasantha Jayasinghe was instrumental in contributing to the successful completion of quality management system in accordance with the ISO Standards.
