24-hour banking services from NSB next month

The National Savings Bank (NSB) will introduce 24-hour banking services from next month. Their first 24-hour branch will be at the new economic centre at Meegoda.

Chairman, National Savings Bank D. M. Swaminathan said that this is their 105th branch and if the concept is successful they would introduce night banking to other areas as well.

He said the bank is now 32 years old and the bank is taking steps to introduce fully automated banking service in the air-conditioned premises at this branch. "Most of the facilities offered at our other branches would be available at this branch."

The bank will be opened on February 7 by Minister of Power and Energy Karu Jayasuriya and Minister of Rural Economy and Deputy Minister of Finance Bandula Gunawardane. Meegoda Economic Centre opens on Feb. 6

Sri Lanka's first ever economic export, wholesale and retail centre, the Meegoda Economic Centre will be opened on February 7.

Minister of Rural Economy and Deputy Minister of Finance, Bandula Gunawardane said that the complex was built at a cost of Rs. 70 million by the Central Engineering Consulting Bureau in 77 days.

"The funds for the project were from an unutilized foreign grant awarded to the Food and Nutritional program some time ago."

The Minister said that a railway station, post office, police post, service station and all other basic requirement's are available at this centre.

"The contractors who were involved in this project have built a Rs. 5 million complex free."

Gunawardane said that most of the transactions at the Meegoda centre will be computerised and prices of essential items will be broadcast on the radio and television daily at 12 midnight and at 6 a.m. "When the prices of vegetables are published there will be a sharp drop in vegetable prices."

The Minister said that similar centres will be opened in Gampaha, Embilipitiya, Nuwara Eliya, Ranna, Bakamuna and Wellawaya.
