Violence comes to abrupt halt in Nepal

KATHMANDU, Friday (AFP) - Political violence has come to an abrupt halt in Nepal following this week's ceasefire between the government and Maoists, an official said Friday, as lower-rank rebels began arriving in Kathmandu.

"We have not received any news of subversive activities," home ministry spokesman Gopendra Bahadur Pandey told AFP, cautioning, however, that it sometimes takes days before news of incidents reaches the capital.

Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, alias Prachanda, in his ceasefire statement on Wednesday called on his far-left activists and militants to honour the truce. On Thursday, a member of the Maoist mediating team, Dadhi Raj Lamichhane, said all cadres and government forces disregarding the ceasefire should be regarded as "traitors".
