by M. A. Phakurdeen - Addalaichenai Group Correspondent

A large number of Muslims from Ampara, Batticaloa and Trincomalee Districts thronged Oluvil Campus of the South eastern University of Sri Lanka to extend their fullest support to the Muslim National Evaluation Procession and declaration of a Muslim Nation in addition to the five demands put forward by the Students Community of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka on Wednesday (29th January).

The procession started from two ends viz. Addappallam and Palamunai and reached Oluvil Campus at 10.45 a.m. After a two hour long walk and thousands of people from all walks of life affirmed the declaration after saying 'Nare Thakbeer' Allahu Akbar'. A large number of students and the University Graduates and females too participated in the procession carrying slogans and demanded Muslims rights. A monument specially erected to mark those who sacrificed their lives for the sake of Muslim Community and for losses incurred by them, was also unveiled by a child. This was erected in front of the Oluvil Campus facing Akkaraipattu-Kalmunai Main trunk road.

All shops, offices, schools and other Government Departments in the Muslim areas of these three Districts remained closed. Long distance buses were in service. Although public transport was allowed to operate their services as usual none of the buses operated their services. All the roads in Ampara District were decorated with green tissues and slogans depicting the rights of the Muslims. The five demands put forward by the Students Community of the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka are as follows:

* Recognition of the North-East Muslims as district Nation. * Recognition of the identified Muslim homeland in the North and East and the guarantee of its territorial integrity. * Recognition of the inalienable right of self-determination of the North-East Muslims. * Based on the above, the recognition of the rights of the North-East Muslims for a separate Muslim political administrative Unit. * Ensure Muslims living out of North and East their social, economical, political and cultural rights. In addition to this, five immediate demands too have been put forward by the Students Community, out of which the Self Autonomy of Muslims should be ensured in the proposed Federal System. A large number of Organisations, Teachers Organisation and Students Organisations too were present at the procession and the public meeting followed at Oluvil Campus Grounds. An additional strength of Police were also seen on duty in almost all the villages and Towns of the District.
