Independence commemoration in Chennai

Sri Lanka Mahabodhi Society has made elaborate arrangements to commemorate the 55th Anniversary of Independence in Sri Lanka at the Mahabodhi Viharaya, Chennai, South India on February 04. A large number of Buddhist organizations in India including Buddhawedu Bodhi Dharma Society,South Indian Buddhist Association, Buddhist Society of South India, Buddhadhamma Society, Dhammachakka Foundation and Bodhidharma Foundation are sponsoring the celebrations. War refugees domiciled in India are expected to attend in large numbers as a measure of showing their cooporation in the ongoing peace process in Sri Lanka. .

Customs detain Rs.3.5 m Beedi leaves consignment

A massive consignment of beedi leaves worth Rs.3.5 million was detained by Customs officers at the Colombo Port yesterday while the clearing agency was attempting to smuggle it in as Caustic Soda to evade duty.

The Wharf Clerk from the clearing Agency was arrested along with the leaves container, imported from India by a businessman from Pettah. The businessman is said to have fled to India following the detection.
