The special Police team conducting investigations in connection with the complaints of kidnapping of youth and other civilians in the North and East by the LTTE, yesterday reported to IGP T.E. Aanadarajah that they have questioned the parents of 15 missing persons. Staff DIG Keerthi Gajanayake yesterday told the Daily News that over fifty complaints of missing persons have been received by the IGP. I nvestigations revealed that some of the missing persons had left their homes early last month, but had not returned home upto yesterday afternoon. Earlier President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga called for a report from the Inspector General of Police on the course of action taken in connection with the complaints of kidnapping of youth and other civilians in the North and East by the LTTE. Each team comprises of five members headed by a Superintendent of Police. They will probe into the investigations conducted by the local police and give necessary directions to complete the ongoing investigations and to apprehend the culprits. The IGP has directed the special police team to submit a progress report on each abduction case within a week. (SM) |
