Greenidge to guide Bangladesh

DHAKA, Monday (Reuters) Former coach Gordon Greenidge has joined the Bangladesh team's tour of Namibia ahead of the cricket World Cup, an official said on Monday.

"Greenidge has already joined the team in Namibia to help coach Mohsin Kamal as a consultant, but only for a short period," a Bangladesh cricket board official said.

Greenidge, the former West Indies opening batsman, will work with the team during five one-day warm-up matches in Namibia but will not travel with them to South Africa, where the majority of the tournament's 54 matches will be held, on January 31.

The 51-year-old guided Bangladesh to victory at the ICC Trophy in 1997, a triumph that paved the way for Bangladesh to make their debut in the 1999 World Cup in England.

Greenidge scored 7,558 runs, including 19 centuries, in 108 tests between 1974 and 1990, making him the third most prolific West Indies batsman in test history.

Bangladesh World Cup squad Squad: Khaled Mashud (captain), Hannan Sarkar, Al-Sahariar, Mohammad Ashraful, Habibul Bashar, Sanwar Hossain, Alok Kapali, Tapash Baisya, Mohammad Rafique, Manjurul Islam, Talha Jubair, Mashrafe Mortaza, Tushar Imran, Ehsanul Hoque, Khaled Mahmud.
