Players contract issue may be sorted out after team returns

by Sa'adi Thawfeeq

The Board of Control for Cricket in Sri Lanka (BCCSL) interim committee adopted a 'wait and see' policy giving time for the Sri Lankan cricketers to make up their minds over the signing of the Players Contracts for the World Cup tournament in South Africa next month.

Interim Committee chairman Hemaka Amarasasuriya who threatened legal action if the players refused to sign the contracts said: "We have been given time by the ICC (International Cricket Council) to sort this matter out. We will wait and see for a few more days".

The BCCSL and the Sri Lanka players are at a deadlock over the payment issue to compensate for the any losses the players may incur on advertising during the World Cup tournaments till 2007.

The BCCSL are prepared to pay the players only between 10 and 12 percent of the guarantee money they will receive from the World Cup, whereas they players are demanding a 20 percent cut.

"Amarasuriya said that he would prefer to speak to Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya one-to-one rather than go through the Sri Lanka Cricketers' Association whom he said had not presented a clear picture of the issue to the cricketers and adviced them of the repercussions they may face if they refused to sign the contracts.

Amarasuriya said that Jayasuriya had called him last morning from Melbourne and stated that they would come to a settlement yesterday (Monday). But he had not heard from him since then.

Sri Lanka are playing their final VB one-day triangular series match against Australia at Melbourne today and are scheduled to return home on Wednesday having failed to qualify for the three-match finals which will be contested by Australia and England.

Amarasuriya said the issue of contracts will more or less be likely to be concluded after the team returns.
