by Rajmi Manatunga Commuters travelling from Colombo to Matara were greatly inconvenienced yesterday due to a strike launched by the Colombo-Matara private bus operators. A spokesman for the Matara Private Bus Owners Association said that the strike was held opposing the authorities' decision to reduce the time allocated for private buses to load passengers and the move by the National Transport Commission (NTC) to renew the route permit of a particular bus owner whose permit had been cancelled for three years. "We also oppose the decision of the Western Province Transport Authority to increase charges of log sheets and service permits and will be on strike until the respective authorities take action to solve these problems," he said. NTC Chairman A. B. Thalagune said that a route permit was issued to the bus owner concerned only after he had paid the administrative fee ordered by the Commission and made an appeal to the Ministry. |
