25,000 minor tanks to be developed

by Trincomalee correspondent

The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Management proposes to rehabilitate 25,000 minor tanks in all parts of the country under a five-year plan with foreign funds.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Irrigation and Water Management Gamini Jayawickrema Perera at Trincomalee.

Very soon youth corps will be formed electoratewise. They will be given training and made to work in the development projects.

It is necessary to conduct awareness programmes for the youth to await themselves of their responsibilities in participating in development activities. Home guards will also be used in development activities.

According to Minister Jayawickreme Perera though almost all the tanks have been filled due to rain there is a prediction by the Meteorological Department about a five months drought. Therefore it is very necessary to preserve water for cultivation. Water should not be allowed to be wasted. Officials responsible should not submit to political pressure in this regard.

He wanted irrigation officials to work with dedication and adhering to discipline.
