Rs.11 million for youth development

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The Government has allocated over Rs.11 million to the National Youth Services Council (NYSC) for its youth development activities this year to cater to the needs of country's younger generation.

The NYSC, the pioneer state institution for youth welfare will launch a wide range of youth development programmes this year, a NYSC spokesman told the Daily News.

He said the Government has declared 2003 as the `year of employment'.

In this situation, the NYSC has laid emphasis on vocational training and career guidance by guiding unemployed youth towards employment.

The NYSC will implement a self-employment training programme which aims to minimise youth unrest stemming from economic problems.

He said the NYSC has also made arrangements to improve the mental, physical and leadership abilities of youth in countrywide youth clubs. Special programmes will be implemented to upgrade vocational and sports skills of these youth.

At present there are over 9,320 Youth Clubs throughout the country with a membership of nearly 700,000 youth which comes under the purview of the NYSC. The NYSC will take steps to develop and set up new youth clubs by enrolling new members, he said.

During this year, the NYSC will conduct 24 international language training courses and recruit 1,800 youth to follow these courses.

In addition, the NYSC will conduct the National Youth Awards Ceremony and Youth Sports Festival as usual.
