by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The Colombo Municipal Council will take legal action against several food parlours at leading shopping complexes within the city for selling unhygienic food. This follows a recent raid by the Municipal's health officials who discovered that almost all these food parlours were preparing food under unhygienic conditions. Municipal Chief Medical Officer Dr. Pradeeep Kariyawasam said these food parlours are not even permitted to prepare food inside the shopping complexes, but allowed to sell cooked meals brought from outside. The raid was conducted following public complaints. Officials have found that the food parlours were storing raw food together with cooked food. "Some refrigerators had not been cleaned for months," an official who participated in the raid said. Officials also discovered that at one food parlour, the table used to prepare pizza was dirty while in another place, roast chicken was kept on a garbage bin. Dr. Kariyawasam said the shopping complex management have been informed to close these food parlours, and advised not to allow food parlours to cook food inside the shopping complexes. "Legal action will be taken against them very soon," he added. In separate inspections on food stalls in the Galle Face Green and on mobile fast food restaurants in the city, officials recovered food which they claimed as unhygienic. Investigations revealed that some food items contained bacteria. The Municipality plans to crackdown on school and Government institution canteens. |
