by Asanga Warnakulasuriya Two marble Buddha statues missing from Piyarathanarama Viharaya in Dodangoda was found by police in the nearby Yatadolawatta Viharaya. A monk arrested by Dodangoda police for retaining the Buddha statues was later released on bail by Matugama Magistrate Mahinda Pindeniya. Piyarathanarama Viharaya chief incumbent who left on January 6 to attend a religious ceremony noticed the disappearance of the two statues from the temple on his return on January 11 and informed police. On a tip-off, police found the two statues from the Yatadolawatta Viharaya. The two statues said to have been brought from Burma are over 100 years old, Dodangoda police said. The statues were sent to the Archaeological Department for examination and to estimate its value, police added. Dodangoda police are investigating on how the statues came to Yatadolawatta Viharaya. |
