by Ananda Kannangara If the country's economic situation improves, the Government will consider a salary increase for public servants in the middle of this year, Finance Minister K.N. Choksy told the Daily News yesterday. He said public servants' salaries will have to be increased considering the country's cost of living. This will be done after consulting Trade Unions. Meanwhile, a senior Public Administration Ministry official referring to the statement by Choksy said the announcement about the salary increase will be made by Minister Vajira Abeyawardena after consulting Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and Minister Choksy. He said a "definite word" will be given by Minister Abeyawardena who is abroad. "If the Finance Minister has given a clue regarding this much-awaited issue which has also become an important topic among public servants, political parties and Trade Unions, there will be a positive response from Minister Abeyawardena," the official said. He said there are possibilities of increasing private sector employee's salaries too. |
