SAARC Secretary General Q.A.M.A Rahim yesterday urged Sri Lanka to play a role in convening the delayed Summit of the South Asian Leaders, Foreign Ministry sources said. Rahim, during a meeting with Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando requested Sri Lanka, as a politically neutral but prominent member of the seven-member nation, to get the Summit back on track. Fernando has agreed to the request and will commence necessary steps through proper channels, the sources said. The 12th SAARC Summit, to be held in Islamabad last week, was postponed due to the tension between India and Pakistan. There is no indication of fresh dates for the Summit though Pakistan has claimed that it intends to hold the Summit by mid-March. However, Islamabad has notified that it will not announce new dates until India confirms its participation. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is also due to take up the issue with Indian leaders when he visits Delhi next month, senior Ministry officials said. |
