Sixth Diri Piyasa Centre opened in Vavuniya

by Nadira Gunatilleke

Women's Affairs Minister Amara Piyaseeli Ratnayake opened the sixth Diri Piyasa Centre at Mundumurippu on the Vavuniya-Kandy road, Vavuniya recently.

The new Diri Piyasa centre will bring relief to a large number of war widows in the North, Co-ordinating Secretary to the Minister, Major V. B. Karunaratne said.

The new centre will be a boost to the ongoing peace process and provide solutions for problems faced by Northern women.

A lady doctor, a female attorney, a female counselling officer and a WPC will be attached to all these centres. They offer women solutions for their mental and physical problems, medical and legal advice for sexually harassed women and for women who have problems at their work places. Arrangements will also be made to protect women's human rights through these centres. All services of these centres will be free.

Vanitha Diri Piyasa centres are to be set up at electorate level under the Government's Kantha Diri Maga Program.
