LTTE denies abduction of soldier

by Ranil Wijayapala

Batticaloa LTTE Deputy Military leader Ramesh has denied any LTTE involvement in Friday's abduction of a soldier in Kallady area in Batticaloa. He had charged that another group was committing the abductions to put the blame on the LTTE.

Ramesh denied LTTE involvement in the abduction of this soldier at a meeting held between Security Forces personnel, Police and the LTTE at the Vavunativu Divisional Secretariat.

The soldier attached to the Army's Intelligence Unit was abducted by an unidentified group on Friday while in civvies. According to Defence sources the abduction had been taken place at the 'Bar road', Kallady.

The Army, with the assistance of the Police and the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) in Batticaloa obtained a search warrant and searched a house where the abduction allegedly took place but were unable to find the missing soldier.

According to military sources, the Security Forces suggested checking all vehicles in the Batticaloa area since they had information that the soldier had been abducted by a group who came in a Dolphin van.

However, the LTTE has not agreed to this suggestion, the sources added.

The Commander of the 23rd Division, Minneriya, Brigadier Balasooriya, 233rd Brigade Commander Colonel Rajitha Silva, SPs Upul Seneviratne and Ranawaka from the STF, and two ASPs of Police also participated in this discussion.

Batticaloa Political Wing Leader Kaushalyan, Varadan and Sugie participated in this discussion representing the LTTE.
