First psychiatric symposium in the United Kingdom

by Colvin L. De Silva Our London Correspondent

The Sri Lankan Psychiatrists Association in the United Kingdom following their success at the holding of an International Conference on Mental health and Psychiatry in Colombo in April, 2002 took a bold step in organising the first-ever Psychiatric Conference in Coventry, United Kingdom.

The Chief Guest at this symposium was Dr. Andrew Fairburn and there were over one hundred attendees. Present on the occasion on the invitation of the Association were two Sri Lankan doctors - Dr. Budhi Karunatillake and Dr. Samudra Kathtriaratchi. In addition the symposium was attended by several Indian, Pakistan and British Psychiatrists and among them were Professor R. Chitramohan - who is a consultant in Old Age Psychiatry in North Birmingham and also Assistant Medical Director of the NHS Trust.

Talking to the Daily News Dr. Bobby Somasunderam, President of the Sri Lankan Psychiatrists Association who is the livewire of the Association and himself a Consultant in Old Age Psychiatry in the Warwickshire NHS Trust, said that the symposium produced highly advanced technological and medical advancements in the field of treatment for modern day patients in Psychiatry.

It was the opinion that most of the patients need very simple treatment for their conditions and what is important is for those affected by mental health to get in front of a qualified psychiatrist at the earliest opportunity.

He continued to say that one of the primary aims of his association is to further the bond of relationships between the members of the Association and their counterparts in Sri Lanka.

The development and exchange of scientific knowledge and training processes between ourselves and our fellow doctors in Sri Lanka is very high on our agenda said Dr. Somasunderam.

Going down memory lane, he said that after all we had our first class training in Sri Lanka in Medical Faculties in Colombo and Peradeniya and the time has come for us to give back our expertise to Sri Lankans.

A participant at the symposium Dr. Tilak Vithana from Alderney Hospital in Poole, Dorset was of the opinion that the Psychiatrists Association is going from strength to strength and they are hoping to have their second Annual Conference in Colombo in August 2003 in collaboration with the South Asian Psychiatrists Forum where both Dr. Bobby Somasunderam and Professor C. Mohan are on the Executive Committee of the latter.
