Port development received highest priority last year - Hakeem

In the face of dwindling development activities in departments and institutions under other ministries, Port Development received the highest priority during the last year, a feature for which I am grateful to the President and the Prime Minister, observed Port Development and Shipping Minister Rauf Hakeem, speaking at the New Year celebrations of his Ministry on January 01 organized by the Seva Vanitha Unit.

Minister Hakeem regretted his inability to devote adequate time for Ministry activities due to his engagements in the peace process and thanked the officials of the Ministry and the Port Authority for efficiently handling their responsibilities in spite of his absence.

He paid a special tribute to Port Authority Chairman Parakrama Dissanayake for the efficient and successful management of operational activities which have improved largely during the year.

The Port Authority has to compete with South Asia Gateway Terminal Company in Container operations.Various kinds of taxes consume a large part of the revenue earned by the Authority. These are conditions adverse to the development of the Port Authority.

Yet under such circumstances, I assure more of my time and achieve better results through the cooperation of our employees during the ensuing year, stated Minister Hakeem.

Acting Ministry Secretary M.N. Junaid delivered the welcome address.
