by Patana group correspondent The ongoing peace negotiations had created a conducive climate for peace in the country. Yet we have to win a bigger battle against the deadly drug menace. This evil should be totally eliminated from society as it spoils the life of the younger generation at large, said DIG, Central Province, Southern Region Kandy Nimal Mediwaka. He was addressing a peace meeting jointly organised by the Hatton Police and 16th Federation of the Hatton Peace Council at the Hatton UC Auditorium recently. The meeting was chaired by the Hatton HQI Vasantha Meegoda and attended by the Hatton-Dickoya UC Chairman M. A. S. Abusally, Ambegamuwa PS Chairman Ragunathan, members of Hatton UC and Ambegamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha, Estate Supdts, OICs and Police Officers from Norwood, Maskeliya and Bogawanthalawa. Trade Union officials, traders and the clergy of all religious denominations participated. He said that all the media today are publishing daily, evil deeds such as abduction, rape or molestation, harassment, arson etc. from some corner of the country. These evil practices prevail in society specially among the younger generation. This could be attributed to the evils of illicit liquor and drugs. Not only does it cause bodily harm to the users but it also creates a hazardous environment as well. Therefore these should be eradicated from society he stressed. He said that some big businessmen who were arrested for drugs send their children for foreign education but spoil others' children. He deplored the evil deeds and habits that had entered our society because our cherished culture, tradition, heritage and religious teaching are being forgotten and neglected. Hatton HQI Vasantha Meegoda, Chairman Hatton UC M. A. S. Abusally, Chairman Ambegamuwa Pradeshiya Sabha Ragunathan, Somapala and several others also spoke. |
