Sri Lanka win warmup one-day match MELBOURNE, Sunday (AFP) - Sri Lanka won the first match of their Australian cricket tour with an 80-run victory over a Victorian Country XI at Hastings on Sunday. Sri Lanka made 219 for seven from their allocated 40 overs and bowled out the locals for 139. In a further boost for Sri Lanka, star spinner Muttiah Muralitharan bowled for the first time since returning from a hernia operation here in November. Muralitharan, who has not bowled in a match on the tour, finished with 0-13 off three overs. Thilan Samaraweera topscored for Sri Lanka with 58 after captain Sanath Jayasuriya won the toss and batted. Sri Lanka's win was their first of the tour after they lost an earlier tour match against Australia A and three one-day internationals against England and Australia. A crowd of 8,150 watched the match with proceeds going towards extending a cancer hospital in Colombo. Sri Lanka's next match is against Australia A in Melbourne on New Year's Day. |
