Suspects in forgery case re-remanded

Two young women from Katugastota, remanded for allegedly obtaining loans from a bank in Kandy after posing as hospital employees and submitting forged documents, were re-remanded by D. L. M. Seneviratne recently.

According to police each suspect had obtained a loan of Rs. 60,000 in August 1999 after submitting forged salary particulars and documents carrying forged rubberstamps of top officials in the Health Department.

The suspects had not paid the instalments after January 2000. The bank has conducted inquiries and found that suspects are not hospital employees, the police said.

When the case was called, IP Rohan Wanigasekera, OIC Fraud Detective Bureau Kandy, submitted a further report and said police inquiries were still incomplete. He also told court that suspects are on remand under the Offences Against Public Property Act No. 12 of 1982 and moved that they be re-remanded.

The suspects P. Sriya Malkanthi and J. Nandana Manamendra were re-remanded till January 8.
