Most of the irrigation tanks in the Matara district are in a state of disrepair say farmer organisations in the district. Among them are Kubalgama tank at Matara, Maluwarala tank at Athuraliya, Maramba tank at Akuressa, Denagama and Moragahawela tanks at Hakmana and Mawarala tank at Pasgoda. As all these tanks have been silted the water capacity in them has also been reduced to the minimum, farmers said. Requests have been made to the authorities concerned to repair and reconstruct the tanks. According to senior officials attached to the District Irrigation Office Matara adequate funds has been the main obstacle to effect these repairs. |
