Seminar on poverty alleviation and conflict resolution

The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific of the United Nation Organisation conducted a five day seminar on Poverty Alleviation and Conflict Negotiation Skills among Youth at Maharagama Youth Centre recently.

40 field officers of various institutions including Youth Services officer, Social Service officers, Samurdhi Managers, Rural Development officers, Teachers and N.G.O. workers were among the participants. The Secretary to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports N.G. Punchihewa, Additional Secretary P. Madugoda and the Chairman and the Director General of the National Youth Services Council Sunil Jayaweera were also present at the inaugural ceremony.

Government department as well as N.G.O. field officers islandwide were selected for the seminar of which representatives from the North and the East Provinces also present.

Assistant Social Affairs' Officer of U.N.O. regional office at Hong Kong Asha Jonstan, Prof. Edith Venus of the University of Philippines, A Human Resource Development training expert Dr. Kaingsow Richard and Dr. Sudha Naier, Director Family Services Centre Singapore were the resource persons at the seminar.

It was decided to organise poverty alleviation and conflict negotiation skill among youth units affiliated to ESCAP in all districts in the island and to train youths for the purpose through the trainers who participated at the seminar.
