Indian police arrest three for city blasts

BOMBAY, Dec 24 (AFP) - Bombay police Tuesday said three suspects have been arrested for masterminding two bomb blasts in the city early this month, but has ruled out that Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency was behind the blasts.

"We have arrested three people and believe that they are linked to the two blasts as well as the one unexploded bomb that was found in a bus ... ," city police commissioner M.N. Singh told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

Singh said the three persons belong to a fundamentalist organisation but did not name the outfit.

"The three belong to a fundamentalist organisation, but I cannot reveal its identity," he said.

Early this month, a bomb exploded in the rear seat of a local bus near the Ghatkopar railway station of Bombay, killing two and injuring more than 30 people.

On December 6, another bomb exploded at a McDonald's outlet at the fast food centre of Bombay Central railway station, one of Bombay's busiest. Twenty-one people were injured, three of them seriously, in the blast that sent waves of panic across the city.

Singh, however, ruled out the possibility of involvement by Pakistan's ISI agency behind the blasts.

"It is pointless to blame the Pakistan agency for every explosion that takes place here," he said.

The police had earlier suspected the banned Islamic organisation, Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) as being behind the blasts.
