Stop flirting with members of previous regime N'Eliya new Mayor warns officials

by P. Rajaratnam in Nuwara Eliya

The new U.N.P. Mayor of Nuwara Eliya Chandana Karunaratne severely warned his officials to stop forthwith; what he termed as the 'Jackal games by joining the previous administration and yet trying to carry on.

He requested them to dedicate themselves towards the public by opening a new chapter and join hands with the New Council of members in serving the ratepayers and the residents, he added.

The Mayor who addressed the year ending monthly meeting, said the New council was able to detect a number of frauds, inefficiencies and glaring omissions and commissions by his predecessor, which he was able to openly announce without any fear or favour. But he fervently hoped that at least in the new year such setbacks will not be faced.

The Mayor said the government said its leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had imposed trust and confidence in him and the new council of members and which task they want to accomplish with a sense of responsibility. Hence, he wants everyone to co-operate and do a hard work.

He said he was proud to say that he is not in need or want and he was perhaps one who do not take a cent out of the council coffers as perks or use any of the council's vehicles in the whole. Hence, he expects a clean council and its administration.

Nalin Thilaka Herath stressed the need to ensure the poor people, particularly the estate workers of five estates within the Municipal limits were not in any manner deprived of the basic human need of drinking water, by calling for deeds etc. She said even the laws and other norms do not preclude any person getting water.

She questioned as to how the estate workers will have deeds or ownership for their living lines? The request for drinking water to the poor was strongly supported by Messrs H.M. Abeysinghe, K. Balasubramaniam, D. Mathaven, L. Nehruji and others.

Mayor Karunaratne, outlined his proposals to boost the council revenues from Lake Gregory area, Daily Fair, Cey-Bank, Meat and fish stalls and parking areas - which he said will bring in more revenues for further development of the city.

He also raised the question how a council shop has been transferred to another man by the previous administration in spite of protests and oppositions by two members in the council.

It was decided to have all forms and documents of the council in Tamil language too, as requested by the Tamil members and the members of the public.
