by Gampaha group correspondent Under the Pre-school Education Development Programme a pre-school child national charter will be drawn up and implemented from next year, said Minister of School Development Suranimala Rajapakse. He was speaking at the distribution of pre-school kits to 59 schools at the Mirigama Divisional Secretariat from decentralised funds of the Minister. Minister Rajapakse said that when he was Minister of Education in the Western Provincial Council a Special Pre school Education Project was implemented, a charter was drawn up but due to the shortage of officers its implementation was delayed. He said these kits are given not to get Manapes but to help a section that was deserted and needed assistance for improvement of skills. Nearly 85% to 90% of children go to Pre-schools before they go for formal education. The Minister said "Today 99% of Pre-school teachers are in various levels of education. It is according to their ability that they teach children. Hence a national programme policy and a charter is a necessity for Pre-schools." He said a large amount of aid for education is received from foreign countries but only 60% was utilised. We should make the maximum use of it. The Minister said the child is close to the mother. She comes to school with her child and waits outside till it closes. The free time is used for needlework, reading papers, etc. He said from next year the mothers should be taken inside and a suitable programme drawn up. A health and nutrition programme should be organised for all. |
