by Nadira Gunatilleke Special programmes will be launched to prevent violence in State and private educational institutions, Human Resources Development, Education and Cultural Affairs Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku told the Daily News yesterday. The first step of the programme is re-activating committees at school level to maintain discipline among students. The committees comprise religious dignitaries, principals, teachers, parents and past pupils. These committees are idle at present. The support of school communities will also be obtained while re-activating the committees, the Minister said. Several steps will be taken to control violence in State and private educational institutions. One main task will be re-building the credibility of school education. The Government will play the facilitator's role in preventing violence in the educational institutions, he added. Referring to recent violent incidents in educational institutions, the Minister said most of the incidents had taken place outside the relevant institutions. "We are now exploring the possibility of introducing a special identification symbol or a colour for school buses. Special identification such as yellow school buses can be seen abroad," Kodithuwakku added. Education Ministry sources said measures will be taken to maintain standards of educational institutions. A study is in progress on the role of the Minister of Public school standard in England. At present there is no monitoring body for educational institutions. |
