Commercial Bank clinch Triple Crown by Pelham Juriansz Commercial Bank who clinched their fourth Mercantile Hockey "sevens" title in six years to clearly dominate proceedings at the 26th Mercantile Hockey "sevens" at the Havelock Sports Club grounds recently and won the League Tournament as well repeated their wins when they met Singers in the final of the knockout trophy for the HATNA Challenge Cup on Monday at the Astro Turf. They defeated Singer Ltd easily by 4 goals to nil, leading 2 nil at half time. Thus they emulated their banking rivals, Hatton National Bank by winning the triple crown. The goal scorers for Commercial Bank were S. Gajanayake and Ashan Deegahawatura who scored two goals each. Umpires Ravi Irugalbandara and Dharshana Wijesinghe controlled the game while M. B. Herath was the third umpire. Outstanding during the season for the Bankers have been Pradeep Heenkenda, S. Gajanayake and Ashan Deegahawatura who have scored at will but it has been a team effort that has seen them win the triple. The "A" division final for the HATNA trophy was followed by an awards ceremony and social at the BRC pavilion. The Mercantile Hockey Association (MHA) hosted the Senior Men's and Women's teams that represented them in the Senior Nationals 2002. At this function the Horlicks Trophy (for the League winners) was awarded to the winners Commercial Bank by Malcolm Dias, and the HATNA trophy for the knockout winners was awarded by the President of the Hatton National Bank (HNB) Sports Club, A. G. Mendis last Monday after the knockout final. Dennis de Rosayro, President, MHA speaking at the awards ceremony after the final said that this year the "A" division matches had to be postponed due to the non-availability of the Astro Turf and that is why the Tournament went on till December. "Earlier, the "A" division concluded in March, and in another three weeks time we would be starting the "A" Division Tournament for 2003." said Rosayro. |
