Hakeem extends time for dissidents to return

Ports Development, Shipping, Eastern Development & Muslims Religious Affairs Minister Rauff Hakeem on Wednesday extended an ultimatum to the dissidents to rejoin the party or face expulsion.

Speaking at the Addalaichenai Jumma Mosque during a visit to the East, Hakeem issued a week's extension of the deadline for the dissidents to reconcile and re-join the party, a media release by the Ministry of Ports Development & Shipping, Ministry of Eastern Development & Muslim Religious Affairs stated. Failure to do so will compel him to remove them from the party", it said.

He charged that a move was hatched behind the scenes to break up the party, "However, such evil forces will be overthrown by the majority of supporters who are with them, he said.

Minister Hakeem reiterated that his leadership of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and its symbol of a Tree are well established and accepted even by the Commissioner of Elections and by no means will a compromise be considered, on either of these.
