by Florence Wickramage The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources will declare Karagam Lewaya and Tabbowa as two new sanctuaries during 2003, Minister Rukman Senanayake said yesterday. These two areas are important since a large number of birds frequent the Karagam Lewaya and Tabbowa throughout the year. The Environment Ministry is concerned about the loss of habitats for wildlife with several development programmes planned. As such demarcation of boundaries of national parks and declaration of protected areas are being attended to on a priority basis. The Minister added that out of the three proposed National Parks, Kaudulla was gazetted on April 1, 2002. The documentation has been forwarded to the Government Printer for publishing the notification in the gazette to elevate the Hikkaduwa Nature Reserve to national park status. To elevate Pigeon Island sanctuary to the status of a National Park, information has been forwarded to the Legal Draftsman. The Survey Department is surveying the area for the declaration of the proposed Bogahapitiya sanctuary. As another step to solve the human-elephant conflict, the Ministry will declare the proposed Elephant Corridor connecting Uda Walawe and the Lunugamvehera National Parks, Senanayake added. |
