by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi The Customs has detected two aircraft which were imported to the country without paying due Customs duties and other applicable levies. Sources said the two aircraft had been brought here by a leading flight handling company for domestic use on rent from the USA. So far investigations have revealed that these two aircraft - a passenger and a cargo aircraft had been brought here for a period of four months and the rental value for this period is around Rs 30 - 40 million. Although the particular company had obtained the approval of the Defence Ministry and the Civil Aviation Authority to import these two aircraft, it had not notified the Customs Department. According to regulations, the Customs should be kept informed of any importation for imposition of duties. The detection has been done by the officials of the Marine Division of the Customs when the two aircraft were lying at the Katunayake airport for about one and a half months. |
