by Florence Wickramage The Manager of the Yala Safari Hotel was produced before the Tissamaharama Magistrate by Wildlife Officials recently for the illegal possession of a Giant Squirrel and an Owl. These birds are protected under the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance. The Magistrate fined the man Rs. 15,000 for contravening the provisions of the Fauna and Flora Protection Ordinance and ordered the birds to be released to the Udawalawe National Park. In another raid, the Manager of the Sithuruwan Hotel at Embilipitiya, Dantanarayana Prasanna was taken into custody by Wildlife Officials for the possession of 28 kgs. of Sambhur meat which was seized. The Embilipitiya Magistrate fined him Rs. 10,000. |
