Hylines SC enter champions trophy final

By our Kandy sports correspondent

Hylines Sports Club, Kandy, have entered the finals of the Division one of the Champions Trophy 2002 organised by the Football Federation of Sri Lanka when they emerged champions of the Group B of the tournament. They will now meet the champions of Group A in the finals.

Hylines Sports Club which is from the village of Dangolla in Kandy displayed tremendous fighting qualities in climbing the ladder to the top of the division. They lack in basic amenities and most of the players are just out of school or without employment and they need to be helped.

Hylines SC started the championship tournament on a disastrous note when they lost to Manchester Sports Club, Gampola by a big margin of 2-5 and one of the contributor factors to this defeat was lack of practices as they practise in a small ground at Dangolla which is used for many other sports by the children of the area.

But undeterred they set their target in reaching the top and next they beat Maya Sports Club, Kegalle 1-0 in a game which could have gone either way. With sweet taste of victory now with them they got their acts together to beat Sapphire SC, Ratnapura 4-0 and the strong Red Sun SC, Gampola 5-1. They also beat New Stars, Ratnapura 2-1.

Now the team having found their rhythm they beat the strong York Sports Club, Kandy 3-1 which was a big achievement as the York team had earlier beaten Manchester United quite comfortably. Goal scorers for Hylines in this match were Mohammed Ishar (1), K.L.D. Jayasinghe (1), and T. Dhammika (1). For Kandy York SC Chaminda Rodrigo scored.

In their last match they beat the strong Pelicans Sports Club Kurunegala 3-1 with K.L.D.Jaysinghe (1), R.M.T.B. Ranasinghe (1) and P.D. Liyanage doing the scoring. Beat Pelicans SC at Kurunegala is quite an achievement as they are virtually invincible in their home town.
