Protest against EPDP in Chunnakam

by Asanga Warnakulasuriya

About 250 people gathered near the Chunnakam Road, Kankesanthurai on Thursday demanding the removal of the Chunnakam EPDP office. The crowd had blocked the Chunnakam road by parking vehicles on the road before starting the protest, Chunnakam Police said.

The Chunnakam Police OIC Wijekoon had to call the Riot Squad to disperse the crowd. After the Riot Squad was called to the premises, the crowd had moved towards the Mullakam EPDP Office and had restarted their protest. According to Police the road was blocked by burning tyres.

The Riot Squad had to use tear gas to disperse the violent crowd. Around 1.30 pm Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission had visited the office and had found that the situation was under control, Police said.

Meanwhile, in a separate incident in Delft, about 20 people gathered near the Public Market protesting against the EPDP office in Delft demanding its closure.
