Thilina and Deepika remain unbeaten at trials by Chris Dhambarage The two top ranked players Thilina Piyadasa and Deepika Rodrigo put up a splendid performance to remain unbeaten at the first trials conducted by the Table Tennis Association of Sri Lanka and worked off at the S. Thomas' College indoor Stadium in Mount Lavinia. These trials were conducted in preparation for the Asian Table Tennis championships to be held from February 22 to 28 in Bangkok, Thailand. Thilina Piyadasa was in excellent form as he won all his matches and was stretched into a five setter only once by Rohan Sirisena. Piyadasa won this game 11-7, 11-1, 9-11, 8-11, 11-9. In addition he also had the better of D. Deshappriya 11-6, 12-10, 11-3, B. N. B. Jayasinghe 14-12, 11-8, 11-8, K. S. T. Chalitha 11-7, 11-5, 11-7, Chatura Dushan 11-5, 11-3, 11-7, Indika Prasad 11-7, 11-1, 11-4, Tharindu Samaraweera 11-9, 11-6, 11-4, K. S. T. Lakshan 11-4, 11-5, 11-4, I. T. Gunapala 11-3, 13-11, 11-7, B. C. Chaturanga 11-6, 11-2, 11-6 and N. Sampath 11-6, 11-5, 11-5. The reigning national champion K. S. T. Chalitha despite going down to Thilina Piyadasa recovered well and recorded nine wins against B. N. B. Jayasinghe, Tharindu Samaraweera, Nuwan Sampath, K. S. T. Chalitha, Indika Prasad, Chatura Dushan, Rohan Sirisena, B. C. Chaturanga and D. Deshappriya. The runner up at the nationals Rohan Sirisena was pushed to the third in the championship with only eight victories against B. N. B. Jayasinghe, Nuwan Sampath, Tharindu Samaraweera, B. C. Chaturanga, D. Deshappriya, K. S. T. Lakshan, Chatura Dushan and Indika Prasad. Indika Prasad and I. T. Gunapala also kept their hopes alive with eight victories each. The others who participated in the trials were K. S. T. Lakshan, Nuwan Sampath, B. N. B. Jayasinghe, Chatura Dushan, D. Deshappriya, B. C. Chaturanga and Tharindu Samaraweera. In the women's event the reigning national champion Deepika Rodrigo went on to complete the trials with an unbeaten record defeating M. Kottegoda, M. Prajangani, Dilini Madawala, N. K. Udugama, P. Dilrukshi, L. Basnayake, K. Herath, W. Sandareka, N. Gunasekera, S. de Silva and R. Kameel. The runner up at the nationals Kalpani Herath was placed second at the trials with nine victories. |
