Resting chairs for patients donated

by Wadduwa special correspondent

Fifty special chairs for patients were donated to Nagoda-Kalutara general hospital by P. D. Gunatillaka of Dodangoda to bestow blessings to his mother who died as an invalid in the hospital. The chairs could be utilized by the patients who sleep on the floor of the hospital due to the congestion in wards.

At present Gunatillaka is an engineer in an institute in Singapore. The chairs were specially made for the patients to sleep and rest and they look attractive. The idea of donation of chairs came to his mind, when Gunatilleke visited Nagoda-Kalutara General hospital to admit his invalid mother to a ward, he noticed that all the beds was occupied by the patients and some were sleeping in the corridors of the hospital.

He raised objections when an office of the hospital attempted to give a bed asking one of the patients to leave the bed.

On this day he decided on a chair to be constructed for a patient to sit comfortably or sleep when there is lack of beds in wards.

After the death of his mother, he returned from Singapore and made these special chairs and donated them to Nagoda, Kalutara general hospital. These special chairs were constructed in memory of his mother as this is a meritorious deed.

The back of the chair could be altered to sit a patient comfortably or even to sleep and there is a foot rest attached to the chair.

He gave the model of the chairs to be manufactured by Rio Industries Ltd (Pvt) at Nagoda, Kalutara. Gunatillaka in an interview to 'Daily News' said that it is a meritorious deed to give comforts to a patient and any philanthropist of the Island could donate such chairs to hospitals that are congested.

These chairs were donated to hospital in memory of Gunawathie U. Gunatilleke the mother of P. D. Y. Gunatilleke.
